Because the right photographer can make all the difference between simply having your picture taken and having an experience you'll never forget.
Choosing a boudoir photographer is a very personal decision. You're trusting someone to photograph you in a way that you may never have been photographed before. And for many women, that can feel both exciting and a little intimidating.
You might be wondering whether you'll feel comfortable, whether you'll know how to pose, or whether you'll even like the way you look in your photographs.
I understand those feelings, and after more than 30 years as a professional photographer, I can tell you something I've learned along the way: The most beautiful portraits happen when you feel completely comfortable being yourself.
That's why choosing the right boudoir photographer is about so much more than finding someone whose pictures you love.
1. Find a Photographer Who Makes You Feel Comfortable
This is where I believe everything begins.
You can have beautiful lighting, an incredible setting, and the perfect wardrobe, but if you're uncomfortable with the person behind the camera, it's going to affect your experience.
One of the things I hear most often from my clients is how quickly they feel at ease with me, even when we've only just met.
They tell me they feel comfortable, that they can relax, and that they don't feel the need to pretend to be anyone other than themselves.
And that's exactly what I want.
You don't need to arrive feeling confident. You don't need to know how to pose. You certainly don't need to be someone who enjoys having her picture taken.
You just need to show up as yourself.
2. Look Beyond the Portfolio
Of course, you should love a photographer's work. That's important.
But I encourage you to look a little deeper.
Do the women in the photographs look comfortable? Do their expressions feel genuine? Can you see their individual personalities coming through?
Look for a photographer who can create beautiful images of women with different body types, ages, and personalities.
I've photographed women throughout so many different stages of their lives, and one thing I've learned is that beauty doesn't have an age, a size, or a particular look.
It's individual. And it deserves to be photographed that way.
3. Experience Really Does Matter
Photography is about so much more than knowing how to operate a camera.
It's understanding light, body language, flattering angles, expressions, and all those little details that make the difference between a photograph that's simply nice and one that takes your breath away.
I've been a professional photographer for more than three decades, and my beauty, boudoir, and portrait work has received international photography awards.
I'm proud of those accomplishments, but what matters most to me is how I use that experience to make the women I photograph feel comfortable and beautiful.
I know how to guide you through posing, how to find the light that flatters you, and how to recognize those wonderful little moments when you let your guard down and your personality shines through.
You don't need to know how to do any of that.
That's my job.
4. Make Sure the Experience Is About You
A boudoir session should never feel like you're trying to fit into someone else's idea of beauty.
Some women want something soft, romantic, and feminine. Others are drawn to something dramatic, glamorous, or a little more daring.
There's no right or wrong way to approach it.
Your photographs should reflect your personality, your comfort level, and how you want to see yourself.
And you should always feel that you have a voice in the process.
Before booking a photographer, ask how the session works, what guidance is provided, and how much input you'll have in creating your portraits.
The more comfortable you feel with the experience beforehand, the easier it will be to relax and enjoy it.
5. Read What Other Women Have to Say
Beautiful photographs will tell you what a photographer can create.
Client experiences will tell you what it's like to be photographed by that person.
Over the years, I've had women tell me that their portrait session was one of the best days of their lives.
Some have described the experience as life-changing. Others have even called it healing.
Those words mean a great deal to me.
Because while I want every woman to absolutely love her photographs, I also want her to walk away feeling wonderful about herself.
For many women, the experience becomes something much bigger than they originally imagined.
6. Understand What You're Investing In
Boudoir photography can vary tremendously in price, and I think it's important to understand what you're receiving when comparing photographers.
For me, this has never been about simply taking beautiful photographs. It's about creating an experience where you feel completely comfortable, where you can let your guard down, and where you may discover a side of yourself you haven't seen in a very long time.
After more than 30 years as a professional photographer, I've learned that the connection between a photographer and her client is just as important as the technical skill behind the camera.
At Lust + Love, I've intentionally created a more personal, elevated experience. I don't believe in rushing women through a session or making them feel as though they're just another appointment on the calendar.
My portrait experiences are a significant investment, and I understand that they won't be the right fit for everyone.
But I also know what women have shared with me afterward. They've called their experience life-changing, healing, and one of the best days of their lives.
And while I can't promise that every woman will feel exactly the same way, I can promise that I'll bring my experience, artistry, and personal attention to creating photographs that I hope you'll treasure for a lifetime.
7. Choose Someone You Trust
Ultimately, choosing a boudoir photographer comes down to trust.
You should feel comfortable asking questions. You should feel heard when you express concerns. And you should never feel pressured to do something that doesn't feel right for you.
Whether you're celebrating a milestone birthday, marking a new chapter in your life, or simply doing something wonderful for yourself, the experience should feel like it belongs to you.
And if you're nervous? That's perfectly okay.
You don't have to arrive feeling fearless or confident.
Sometimes, the most wonderful part of the experience is discovering just how comfortable, beautiful, and confident you can feel.
